Winter weather expected Wednesday and Thursday

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4:00 AM WEDNESDAY TO 10:00 AM PST THURSDAY ABOVE 4,500 FEET

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Medford, Ore. office of the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the quad county area. Up to 6 inches of new snow and winds upwards of 50 MPH are expected.

Snow expected above 4500 feet except locally lower near Crescent and Gilchrist.

Total new snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are likely. Wind gusts from the southwest at 30 to 50 mph are possible, at times, leading to blowing and drifting snow, mainly in exposed areas.

Affected Areas

In California: Modoc County and eastern Siskiyou County. Portions of Highway 139 between Canby and Adin, portions of Highway 299 at and near Cedar Pass, and a portion of Highway 395 between Davis Creek and Willow Ranch.

In Oregon: Klamath and Lake Counties portions of Highway 97 from around Modoc Point northward to Gilchrist, and portions of Highway 140 between Bly and Adel.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Additional snowfall with lower snow levels is likely between the 24th and the 30th of December. Be sure to check for additional details as that time frame nears because travel is likely to be significantly affected by winter weather, at times, during that time period.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. NWS Advisory levels defined.

The red line shows the daily average snow level elevation through the week. The Snow level will start out around 4700 feet Wednesday before lowering to 2400 feet around Thursday. Snow levels will continue the dive downwards towards Friday and the weekend to around 2000 feet. By Sunday, snow levels are forecast to be down to a few valley floors across the region. There is snow in the forecast for the valleys by Sunday with more of a rain snow mix on Saturday.
