Strong spring storm could bring 2 feet of snow to Cascades, inches to basin floor

MEDFORD, Ore. - The National Weather Service office in Medford has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Cascades with up to 2 feet of snow, and a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the Klamath Basin to include several inches of snow.

Significant mountain snowfall is expected in the Southern Oregon Cascades through Tuesday. 1 to 2 feet is expected in the highest terrain. Most snow impacts will occur at 2500 feet and above, though occasionally the snow levels will dip to below those levels, particularly at night and morning timeframes. Worst road conditions are likely at night/morning timeframe.

Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination. Carry tire chains and be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities.

  • WHAT...Heavy, wet snow accumulations of 13 to 21 inches. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph.

  • WHERE...South Central Oregon Cascades including Highways 58, 62, 230, and 138. This also includes Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, Crescent Lake, the resort at Willamette Pass, and Union reek.

  • WHEN...From 5 PM this afternoon to 11 PM PDT Monday.

  • IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility to near white out conditions at times. Heavy snow and strong winds could cause widespread tree damage.

Smaller snowfall amounts between 8 and 13 inches is expected in the Crescent lake area between Highway 97 and Willamette Pass (where snow amounts are expected to rapidly increase).

A Winter Storm Warning means that severe winter weather is imminent and poses a threat to life and property. Take protective action now.

  • WHERE...Portions of the Highway 97 corridor from south of Modoc Point north through Crescent. This includes Chemult and Chiloquin.

  • WHEN...From 5 PM today to 5 PM PDT Monday.

  • IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Strong, gusty winds and blowing snow could reduce visibilities to near white out conditions at times. The heaviest snow will occur tonight into Monday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties.
