UPDATE: The Red Flag Warning has been extended until 11:00 PM Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

MEDFORD, Ore. - The Medford office of the National Weather Services has issued a Red Flag Warning through 11:00 PM today and a Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday.

Through this evening, lightning and high fire danger will likely result in new fire starts. Gusty thunderstorm winds could contribute to fire spread. Despite rainfall, initial attack resources could be overwhelmed and holdover fires are possible.

This is in effect for areas of South Central Oregon and Northern California. (Klamath, Lake, Modoc and Siskiyou Counties)

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected through the evening. Some may bring strong, gusty, erratic outflow winds, brief heavy rain and hail. Winds up to 60 mph near any thunderstorms.

On Wednesday, strong, gusty winds from the southwest and low relative humidity of 10-15% could result in increased fire spread.

Red Flag Warning

A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 11:00 PM this evening for abundant lightning on dry fuels for Fire Weather Zone 624 and 625 in Klamath and Lake Counties of Oregon and Fire Weather Zones 284 and 285 in Modoc and Siskiyou Counties of California.

Fire Weather Watch

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through evening for abundant lightning on dry fuels for Fire Weather Zone 624 and 625 in Klamath and Lake Counties of Oregon and Fire Weather Zones 284 and 285 in Modoc and Siskiyou Counties of California.

Preparedness Actions

Abundant lightning on existing very dry fuels could cause numerous new fire ignitions. Gusty and erratic outflow winds could also create extreme fire growth potential.

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings.

Please use extreme caution.

Scattered thunderstorms will develop across much of the area Monday. Some of these storms may produce small hail, gusty winds and brief heavy downpours. More storms are expected east of the Cascades with less storms Cascades westward. Lightning may result in additional wildfire starts. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! If you are planning outdoor activities, then have a plan for where to go if a storm develops nearby!
