Friday night storm could bring several feet of snow to mountains

Expect snowy, windy weather this weekend as a strong storm system passes through the area. Heavy accumulating snow is expected above 2500 feet, with gusty winds over high terrain, along the coast, and across the East Side. Significant travel delays are possible, especially over the mountain passes. Power outages are possible. Be safe, and be prepared!

MEDFORD, Ore. - Another strong winter storm system will arrive Friday and is expected to produce heavy mountain snow, especially along the Cascades, Siskiyous, and Mt. Shasta area. 1- to 2-feet of snow is possible Friday through Saturday.

Travel is likely to become very difficult or impossible during these periods.

Be prepared! Check your vehicle tires, battery, wiper blades, brakes, heater, fluids, and lights. Don’t forget a full tank of gas and tire chains! Ready an emergency kit with first aid, food, water, flashlights, blankets, a phone charger, and warm clothes.

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST SATURDAY

WHAT
Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 18 inches, except up to 2 feet near Mount Ashland Ski area and Crater Lake. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph over exposed terrain.

WHERE
South Central Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains and Southern Oregon Cascades. This includes Mt Ashland Ski Road and the road to Crater Lake. Lake of the Woods on highway 140, highway 66, and interstate 5 towards Siskiyou Summit.

WHEN
From 4 PM Friday to 4 PM PST Saturday.

IMPACTS
Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, with   occasional whiteout conditions. The combination of strong winds and snow loading on trees could cause tree branches or trees to fall.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The heaviest snowfall is expected between 10 PM PST tonight and 10 AM PST Saturday, with snowfall rates  between 1-2 inches per hour.

WHAT
Heavy wet snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 22 inches, except up to 3 feet towards the Mount Shasta Ski area. Wind gusting as high as 45 mph, will cause reduced visibility due to blowing snow.

WHERE
South Central Siskiyou County, including all areas along I-5 and highway 89, Grass Lake on highway 97 as well as Mt. Shasta City, Dunsmuir, McCloud and Tennant.

WHEN
From 4 PM Friday to 10 PM PST Saturday.

IMPACTS
Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. The combination of snow loading on trees and gusty winds could bring down trees or tree branches.

This in combination with strong winds will result in occasional blizzard like conditions with visibility below a half mile near Weed (including I-5) and possibly as far south as Mt. Shasta City. Heavy wet snow expected above 3000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph within Shasta Valley.

WHERE
Elevations above 3000 feet within Central Siskiyou County. This includes Forrest Mountain Summit on Highway 3 and Interstate 5 near Weed and Hilt.

WHEN
From 4 PM Friday to 4 PM PST Saturday.

IMPACTS
Travel could be very difficult. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Very strong winds may cause tree damage.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
1-2 inches per hour snowfall rates are expected tonight, especially towards Weed. This in combination with the strong winds will cause occasional blizzard like conditions with visibility below a half mile near Weed (including I-5) and possibly as far south as Mt. Shasta City. The timing for these blizzard like conditions are expected to be between 9 PM and 1 AM PST tonight.
