Thunderbirds Sweep Owls

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.. – The University of British Columbia (12-11, 7-3 NAIA-W) powered its way past Oregon Tech (6-19, 2-8 NAIA-W), sweeping an NAIA-West doubleheader 10-0 and 13-8 Saturday afternoon at Kiger Stadium.

The Thunderbirds dominated the first game as they landed five homers and scored all 10-runs in the first two innings.
 
The Owls were able to hold UBC without a run for the next five innings but struggled to score themselves due to the efforts of Niall Windeler on the mound. Windeler struck out seven and allowed only two hits in the game, with Alex Malcolmand Josh Kallstrom managing one each in the loss for OIT.
 
Game 2 University of British Columbia 13 Oregon Tech 8
 
Things went better for OIT in the second game of the day, as Alex Malcolm batted in a run in the first, scoring Micah Jio. An Austin Zavala homer later in the inning brought Tech's lead to three, and Xzavian Gonzales upped it to four with a double in the bottom of the second.
 
The University of British Columbia came back strong in the third, scoring two runs off a Brandon Hupe homer and another from a double, bringing them the lead 5-4. Josh Kallstrom and Tristan Shea hit back-to-back homers in the 3rd to give OIT the lead Back at 6-5.
 
The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the top of the fourth to regain the advantage and two more in the sixth to extend it.
 
Zavala and Emmett Covello batted in two runs in the eighth, but it would not be enough as UBC extended the lead to 13-8 with 3-runs in the ninth to seal the win.
 
Zavala recorded two hits in the game to lead the Owls, batting in three runs.
 
OIT managed to strike out 11 between four pitchers in the game as the Thunderbirds only managed six, though UBC was able to outhit them 16-9.
 
The Hustlin' Owls will face University of British Columbia again tomorrow in a second doubleheader, with games at 11:30am and 2:30pm on Sunday at Kiger Stadium.
