Press release by the Oregon Department of Forestry

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Despite nightly cool temperatures and rain on Saturday, fire season is still in effect in Klamath and Lake Counties. Fuels are still very dry and receptive to fire due to little precipitation throughout the area.

All outdoor burning is still prohibited.

Fire tools, watchman service, and a water supply are still required on forest operations that require a Permit to Operate Power-Driven Machinery.

The protection agencies will continue to evaluate conditions to determine when the fire season will end. This includes Walker Range Patrol Association.

“We are welcoming this first potential “wetting” weather system with open arms for sure and at a minimum will lessen the fire danger potential to a degree. We are approaching 150 days here in Klamath and Lake counties without significant precipitation meaning a quarter inch or more in a 24 hour period.”, states Randall Baley, Unit Forester for the Oregon Department of Forestry. “With that said, it will take a lot more moisture to put us out of fire season completely so please be diligent in being careful when out in the woods and adhere to the debris burn ban still in effect.”

The “Regulated Use Closure” imposed by the Oregon Department of Forestry and Walker Range Patrol Association on the Klamath-Lake District on July 10 will be lifted at 12:01 Wednesday Morning, October 14th.  Fire adjective class will also be at Moderate.

As a reminder wildland and structural fire protection agencies in Klamath and Lake Counties have agreed to prohibit all outdoor debris burning which is still in effect since June 1. The people of Klamath and Lake Counties have been supportive with their fire prevention efforts and the adherence to the fire restrictions over the summer.  We would like to thank the public and encourage everyone to help us with prevention efforts.

Since fire restrictions and regulations vary for different protection agencies, the public is encouraged to know where you will be recreating or working in the woods, who is responsible for protecting that location, and what restrictions are currently in effect for that location.
